Fun games for couples to play on your phones
Games for couples tend to fall into two piles: the box on the shelf that needs a table and an hour, and the phone app that is really a solo game you happen to sit next to each other for. This list is the third pile. Every game here is built for exactly two people, each on their own phone, and every one of them works whether you are on the same sofa or in different countries. None need an account.
Games about the two of you
These are the ones to start with if you want a laugh and a bit of a conversation. They all follow the same rule: you both answer privately, then the answers flip over together, so nobody can adjust to what the other one said.
- Newlywed: six questions, half about you, half guessing about them. The mismatches are the funny part.
- Would you rather: eight dilemmas a round and a compatibility score that builds over weeks.
- Two truths and a lie: three statements about yourself, one false. Can they catch it?
- Memory lane: a quiz about your own history, written by you, answered by them.
- Question of the day: one question, two private answers, two minutes. The easiest ritual to keep.
Games that make you talk
Cooperative games are the ones that make a long distance evening feel like being in the same room. The trick is to give each of you half the information.
- Escape room: five puzzles, half the clues on each phone. You only get out by describing what you see.
- Codenames for two: one spymaster, one operative, eighteen words and a clock. The best word-association game there is, now for a couple.
- Story ping-pong: a ridiculous opening line, then one sentence each. Read it aloud at the end.
- Emoji charades: describe a film in eight emoji, let them guess, judge generously.
Games to win
For the competitive evenings. All of these keep a record on the room’s leaderboard, which is either a feature or a problem depending on who is winning.
- Wordle race: same word, two boards, fewer guesses wins.
- Word search: one grid, six hidden words, both of you hunting live.
- Jumble: five scrambled words, same for both, fastest clean solve wins.
- Connect 4: the one you already know, playable one move at a time across a day.
How a game night works
- One of you starts a room and sends the link. The other taps it, types a name, and is in. No signup.
- Pick a game from the shelf or spin the wheel if you cannot decide.
- Play on a call for the live games, or over the day for the turn-based ones. Every game here works both ways.
- The scoreboard, streak and compatibility score live in the room and build over weeks.
A good first night
Start with Would you rather, because it takes three minutes and warms everyone up. Follow it with Newlywed for the laughs. Finish with the escape room, which takes fifteen minutes and needs you both talking. That is under half an hour and it covers the whole range.
